Podiums for Hayden and Rosko-Fong at Timmins National

It was a sunny and balmy minus 5°C (23°F) weekend in northern Ontario, where Round 6 of the Rockstar Energy Drink CSRA Snowcross Champion-ship was held March 7/8 on a specially constructed racetrack in the snow dump of the City of Timmins. Historically the event has attracted up to 3,000 spectators and once again a large turnout of sledding enthusiasts made their way to Timmins on both days to watch Canada’s top racers in action.

For Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing, it was another mixed bag of results weekend that didn’t necessarily reflect the level of racing produced by its drivers. Defending Pro Open Champion Iain Hayden struggled with his sled in Saturday’s heats as well as the final, claiming 5-4-4 finishes on the day. Poor starts, which saw Hayden at the back of the back each time out, proved to be the biggest challenge for him to overcome in a bid for a top-five finish.

The highlight of Hayden’s Timmins campaign came on Sunday, when, despite more mediocre starts, he nailed down a respectable third place in the final, after bulldozing his way through two uneventful qualifying heats in which he recorded 5-5 finishes.

“Coming up with the right formula that translates into podium finishes proved difficult again this weekend. I don’t know if we’re having a synergy problem of some kind or if we’re just stuck in a rut,” Hayden said. “It’s frustrating and somewhat disheartening, but in racing, like in life, sometimes you bite the bear and sometimes the bear bites you.”

Hayden’s Pro Open teammate, Dylan Hall, didn’t fare much better in the deep Timmins snow. In his Saturday qualifying heats, the Ayr, Ontario native stayed top-five with 4-5 results. In the final, however, Hall would have to take satisfaction with a tepid seventh place at the checkered flag.

Sunday’s races again saw Hall commanding top-five positions, with his best finish, second place, recorded in heat two. In his first heat, Hall snared fourth place while in the final he crossed the finish line in fifth.

“At this level of racing you want to finish on the podium, or at least top-five, so when you cross the finish line in seventh you’re asking yourself ‘what’s wrong with this picture?’ It certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying, but things just didn’t quite come together and all we can do is regroup for the next round,” Hall said.

While Jakob Rosko-Fong got off to a tentative start to the weekend on Saturday, which still saw him claim respectable 5-2 finishes in his Pro Lite qualifying heats, and a frosty 10th place in the final, he more than redeemed himself by nailing down 1-1 results in Sunday’s heats to then mix it up with the frontrunners in the final to snare a third place podium finish.

“It was a tough weekend for me, as I was dealing with a flu bug and generally feeling out of sorts. Saturday I found it difficult to get into a racing mode and basically hoped just to get through the day,” Rosko-Fong said. “But after a good night’s rest, I was able to regroup on Sunday and hold my own, especially in the heats. I got good starts and everything just kind of fell into place.”

Round 7 of the Rockstar Energy Drink CSRA Canadian Snowcross Championship will resume on March 28/29, in Kitchener, Ontario, after a two-week break in the schedule. Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing will, in the meantime, head to Sweden, where Iain Hayden and Dylan Hall will campaign the FIM Snowcross World Championship on March 21st.
