http://ca.rockstarenergy.com/company/news/third-overall-for-matt-goerke-as-eastern-leg-mx-tour-kicks-off-at-sand-del-lee <![CDATA[Third overall for Matt Goerke as eastern leg MX Tour kicks off at Sand Del Lee ]]> 2018-09-24T10:18:40-07:00 Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha’s Matt Goerke and the rest of the top-five 450 Pro Championship contenders raised the competition bar a notch or two at the opening round of the eastern leg of the Triple Crown Series MX Tour on Saturday, July 7th. Goerke and the other usual suspects took no prisoners as they battled for position and precious championship points on the rough and tough Sand Del Lee Motocross Park track near Ottawa. When all was said and done, Goerke, who qualified second, hammered down 3-3 motos to garner third overall on the day. His teammate Dylan Epstein, who qualified third, finished a noteworthy sixth on the strength of 6-5 motos.

Fortunately, the inhuman heatwave that had been parked over south/eastern Ontario for the past week, driving temperatures up to 34°C – feeling more like 44°C thanks to the humidity – had dissipated. Still, the thermometer reached a high of 30°C, the hottest weather yet to greet the MX Tour, which is now just past its midway point. A steady 25 km/h wind provided some relief from the scorching sun.

In the first moto, Goerke nailed a top five start while Epstein squeezed in just inside the top 10. With the likes of Kaven Benoit, who pegged the holeshot, Tyler Medaglia, Colton Facciotti and Cole Thompson just ahead of fifth place running Goerke, the racing was intense.

The frontrunners quickly put some serious real estate between themselves and the rest of the field as they hounded each other, looking to make passes and challenge Benoit for the lead. The Quebecer, however, would prevail in that position until the checkered flag. At the halfway mark a heated battle, which would continue until the chequered flag, saw YZ450F mounted Goerke flash by Thompson. Goerke next set his sights on Facciotti, who displaced Medaglia for second place, with some five laps remaining. Despite giving it all he had, Medaglia would succumb to Goerke’s relentless attacking and lose postion in the closing laps of the moto.

The second moto start again had Goerke slicing into turn one in fifth place, which he quickly converted into third. Ahead of him was holeshooter Tyler Medaglia and second place running Facciotti. It was a battle of the champions, with Facciotti taking over first place from Medaglia around the halfway point. Although he had Goerke all over his rear wheel, Medaglia, racing his home track, managed to hang on to second as they drag raced across the finish line.

For his part, Epstein stayed the course to turn a ninth place first moto start into a sixth place finish. Although he was third off the start in moto two, he stalled his bike a few corners later. By the time Epstein was back in action, he was around 20th place. From there he methodically powered his YZ450F into fifth place by the halfway point and finished in that position

“Sand Del Lee was a successful weekend for us. Matt stayed steady and consistent, keeping himself in the points chase. Dillan had his best weekend to date. So overall, we are moving in the right direction and are looking forward to Gopher Dunes, where Matt has placed first a few times in the past,” said team manager Steve Simms.

The Rockstar Energy Triple Crown Series continues this weekend on Saturday, July 14th, with Round 6 of the MX Tour at Gopher Dunes in Courtland, ON.

http://ca.rockstarenergy.com/company/news/matt-goerke-ties-colton-facciotti-in-450-points-chase <![CDATA[Matt Goerke Ties Colton Facciotti in 450 Points Chase ]]> 2018-09-24T10:18:38-07:00 Although Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha’s Matt Goerke didn’t quite climb the highest rung of the podium at Round 4 of the Rockstar Energy Triple Crown MX Tour, which was held in Minnedosa, MB this past Saturday, he moved up the 450 Pro scoreboard from second place to first, securing a points tie with archrival Colton Facciotti. Both riders currently hold down 199 points as the series heads east, following four rounds in Canada’s western provinces. Goerke’s teammate, Dillan Epstein, also moved ahead on the points scoreboard, vacating eighth place for seventh.

Perfect weather and track conditions – with a comfortable racing temperature of 20°C – greeted the MX Tour contenders at McNabb Valley MX, which hosted its first national motocross event. Both pro classes delivered top-flight, nail-biting racing action on the newly constructed track, with the frontrunners just about breathing down each other’s necks from start to finish.

In the first 450 Pro moto, defending champ Goerke managed a top-10 start that saw him charging around the track in seventh place, after one lap. With everyone pouring on the gas, it took Goerke five laps to make his way into fourth place, a position he would have to live with for the rest of the moto. Despite herculean efforts to make it a top-three finish, the Florida native was unable to stick a pass on third-place Cole Thompson. When the checkered flag was waved Goerke and Thompson followed second-place Tyler Medaglia and winner Kaven Benoit across the finish line.

The second moto start again saw Goerke within the top-10, this time in sixth place, after one lap. He quickly parlayed that into fourth, riding the wheels off his YZ450F to start zeroing in on third place. As in Moto 1 lappers played a major role in the up-front action; at times they were advantageous to a passing manoeuvre, at other times disadvantageous.

With the blazing speeds being recorded by the top-five and challenging track conditions to negotiate, it took Goerke till lap 12 to make a definitive move into third. Once again he was looking at Thompson’s rear fender; once again he would follow him across the finish line, albeit in a podium finish this time out. At the head of the pack Benoit made it a clean-sweep afternoon. When all was said and done Goerke left Minnedosa with third overall, and in a good position to build towards his fourth 450 Pro national title as the MX Tour resumes for Round 5 at Sand Del Lee in Ontario.

For his part, Epstein had to contend with another weekend of finishing off the podium. The Californian produced a first and second moto start that saw him around 10th place as the throng blitzed its way into turn one. Despite going for broke, he would finish outside the top-five both times out. In the first moto he made his way into a seventh-pace finish – in moto two he improved on that finish by one position to claim sixth. Although the sixth overall Epstein garnered for his efforts is not what he had hoped for at the beginning of the day, he was able to take solace with the fact that he moved ahead in the points from eighth to seventh. With five rounds left on the schedule, he is in a position to still break into the top-five to top-three before season’s end.

“The team has been working really hard and I believe it shows. We’re heading into the east tied for the points lead with Matt and we’re making improvements each week with Dillan. This break gives us some time to review the west rounds and come out in full force for the east,” team manager Steve Simms said.

The Rockstar Energy Triple Crown Series continues with Round 5 of the MX Tour, after a three-week break, on Saturday, July 7th at Sand Del Lee Motocross Park in Ottawa, Ontario.

http://ca.rockstarenergy.com/company/news/another-second-overall-for-matt-goerke <![CDATA[Another Second Overall for Matt Goerke ]]> 2018-09-24T10:18:37-07:00 Although he won the first 450 Pro moto at Round 3 of the Rockstar Energy Triple Crown MX Tour at Blackwater MX in Prince George, BC this past Saturday, Matt Goerke would have to settle for yet another second overall, after a third-place finish in moto 2. It was Goerke’s third consecutive second overall finish of the season. Goerke’s Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha teammate Dillan Epstein recorded his best overall to date, hammering down fifth on the strength of consistent 5-5 moto results. With Goerke qualifying first and Epstein second fastest, the stage was set for a confident afternoon of racing

While Goerke would certainly have preferred to win the second moto and claim first overall – something that has eluded him so far this season – the Floridian had no cause to feel as if he under-accomplished at Prince George: He collected enough points to close the gap on archrival Colton Facciotti’s series lead from 21 points to just four. For his part, Epstein remains in eighth place on the scoreboard, but he has tightened up his deficit on the top-five in the series.

The start of the first 450 moto saw Goerke in third place, going into turn 1, behind Kaven Benoit and Tyler Medaglia, who pegged the holeshot. Before the lap was even completed Goerke had installed himself at the head of the pack and never looked back. By the halfway mark of the moto he had a 14 seconds lead on Benoit, who had passed Medaglia for second place. Although Benoit moved heaven and earth to challenge Goerke for the lead, the Quebecer would finish the race a sizeable 7.5 seconds behind Goerke.

The start of moto 2 looked promising for Goerke, who found himself in fourth place behind Cole Thompson, Facciotti, and holeshooter Benoit. A few laps into the moto Goerke set Thompson up for a pass, but the manoeuvre resulted in a get-off instead. Goerke was able to remount quickly enough to lose only two positions. Just before the halfway mark he had taken over fifth place to shortly thereafter inherit third, after Thompson and Facciotti went down together. Medaglia, who had passed Goerke, after Goerke’s crash, took over second place thanks to the Thompson-Facciotti crash, to pursue Benoit. Benoit, however, managed to maintain his lead to the checkered flag and with it the overall.

Dillan Epstein, meanwhile, still in search of an overall podium finish, came up short again. But not for lack of effort. He was able to deliver noteworthy 5-5 motos on the very rough and muddy, difficult to pass on Blackwater MX track. Early morning rains had left the circuit muddy and puddle-filled in some places, spongey in others. Later in the afternoon the track had dried up in some areas, but was still slick in others, calling for tricky and cautious racing.

Epstein got off to a lukewarm start in moto 1, reaching the first turn just inside the top 15. He poured on the gas, however, to pilot his YZ450F into fifth place by lap 6. He would remain in that position till the checkered flag. The second moto start saw Epstein around seventh place going into turn one. He charged from there to take over fifth place on lap three, losing it briefly around the halfway point of the moto, to quickly reclaim it and take it to the finish line.

“Prince George was a good weekend. We made up some valuable points in the championship. Both Matt and Dillan rode freat and we’re looking to keep building on another great weekend in Manitoba,” team manager Steve Simms said.

The Rockstar Energy Triple Crown Series continues with Round 4 of the MX Tour on Saturday, June 16th at McNabb Valley MX in Minnedosa, Manitoba.
